Punjab clinches a thriller against Deccan Chargers
Induction of new Australian players, who have just arrived from their national duty, called the shots in match involving Deccan chargers and Punjab Kings XI yesterday. Brett Lee, who replaced other foreign recruit Yusuf Abdullah, did show ominous signs of his charisma by shining with both ball and bat, to clinch a precious win for Punjab Kings XI.
Deccan Chargers had a decent start to their innings, where both Gilchrist and Gibbs romped quickly two digit scores, but Sreesanth and Chawla accounted for both the openers respectively and brought Punjab in a position of ease.
Deccan Chargers has too many big hitters, where it appeared to be too costly to even think about comfort, where they launched a strong reprisal in form of Suman, but he fell to some good bowling V Mota and also Rohit Sharma was caught behind in leg side of a great slower delivery by Brett Lee.
But Andrew Symonds, who replaced Dwayne Smith, brought back the memories, of his blistering century, in 2003 world cup against Pakistan, where he started the innings with circumspect and later passing that habit to Punjab bowlers, as he staged a brilliant stroke play, to score sixty valuable runs in thirty six balls, with four nightmare sixes, for the crowd.
Venugopal Roa and Andrew Symonds played brilliantly, that they spoiled the figures of the bolwers, whom they encountered at the death barring Brett Lee, who was exceptional both with his pace and change of it as well.
Punjab batsmen came to the middle with a daunting target of one hundred sixty nine runs in that slow pitch and also a possible exit from the tournament, if they fail in this target. S Sohal was very impressive, in his stint in the middle and also he offered the much needed impetus to the Punjab innings, even though losing Katich.
Rohit Sharma was again unlikely star for Deccan Chargers where he managed to remove both the openers and allowed his bowlers to target Sangakkara and Yuvraj, much earlier than they would have fancied. Both of them got out to slow but insidious S Sohaib, where stage was set for another chase debacle.
But Mahela Jayawardene managed, to keep the Punjab run chase, on track with a rollicking forty three runs, of mere twenty eight balls and looked settled to finish the match combining with Brett Lee, but he was run- out by Deccan chargers.
It took a huge six of Brett Lee to tilt the balance, which had its seating with Deccan chargers camp to come back to Punjab and it showed, how a single ball or an event can change the match.
It’s a much needed victory for Punjab and Deccan woes with opening bowlers clearly costed them the match, after the departure of Fidel Edwards.
